Rates, Collateral, Government Schemes and Your EMI
A good MD/MS seat should not slip away for want of money. This guide explains what banks charge, when they need collateral, which government schemes cut your interest, and what your EMI will look like after the course.
Please note: rates and scheme terms were checked on the banks’ and government websites on 28 October 2026. Rates change with the repo rate — confirm with the bank before you apply.

Banks fund MD/MS tuition, hostel and course costs with repayment after the course + 1 year and up to 15 years to repay. Merit-quota students get loans without collateral up to ₹7.5 lakh; above that, or for management quota, banks usually ask for collateral. SBI charges 9.65%–10.15% (from 15 Oct 2026). PM-Vidyalaxmi and CSIS can cut the interest if your college and family income qualify, and the full interest is tax-deductible under Section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
Above ₹7.5 lakh, with collateral.
Merit quota, CGFSEL cover.
After course + 1 year.
Section 129, up to 8 years.
Enter the amount, rate and years to repay. Choose whether you pay interest during the course.

| Rate | Moratorium interest | To repay | Monthly EMI | Total of EMIs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7.90% | ₹13,15,818 | ₹54,79,800 | ₹66,196 | ₹79,43,508 |
| 9.65% | ₹16,07,297 | ₹57,71,279 | ₹75,154 | ₹90,18,447 |
| 10.15% | ₹16,90,577 | ₹58,54,559 | ₹77,856 | ₹93,42,665 |
Upper estimate — banks release fees year by year, so real moratorium interest is lower. Paying interest from the stipend avoids it.
Banks need your KEA/MCC allotment letter and the college’s fee schedule.
Ask the college for a letter showing yearly tuition, hostel and other fees. See the total cost of MD.
Apply through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal if your college is listed; ask the bank about CSIS if family income is up to ₹4.5 lakh.
Ask for the rate, collateral, margin and processing fee in writing from at least two banks.
Paying interest from your stipend during the course keeps the EMI low later.

Yes. Banks lend for PG medical courses under the IBA model education loan scheme and their own products. The loan covers tuition, hostel and other course costs; repayment starts after the course plus one year and can run up to 15 years.
Under the IBA scheme (as run by Canara Bank), merit-quota students need no collateral up to ₹7.5 lakh, which is covered by the CGFSEL guarantee, and 100% collateral above that. Management-quota students need 50% collateral up to ₹4 lakh and 100% above. Some products — such as Bank of Baroda’s Medi Elite up to ₹40 lakh — skip collateral but need parents as co-borrowers.
Yes, but on tougher security terms. Under the IBA scheme a management-quota loan needs 50% collateral up to ₹4 lakh and 100% collateral above ₹4 lakh. Get the fee schedule from the college in writing — banks pay against it.
At SBI from 15 October 2026: 10.15% up to ₹7.5 lakh without collateral and 9.65% above ₹7.5 lakh with collateral, 0.50% less for girl students. Bank of Baroda’s Baroda Medi Elite lists 7.20%–7.90% depending on the institution category. Rates change with the repo rate — check with the bank on the day you apply.
PM-Vidyalaxmi (approved November 2024) gives collateral-free loans to students at quality institutions, with a 75% government guarantee up to ₹7.5 lakh and 3% interest subvention up to ₹10 lakh for family income up to ₹8 lakh. CSIS pays full moratorium interest on loans up to ₹10 lakh for family income up to ₹4.5 lakh, at NAAC/NBA-accredited institutions. Most Karnataka private medical colleges are outside the NIRF top 100, so check the PM-Vidyalaxmi list for your college.
Yes. The deduction earlier under Section 80E is now Section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025: the full interest paid on a loan for higher education of yourself, your spouse, your children or a student you are guardian of, for the first year and up to seven more years. There is no upper limit on the amount.
Often, partly. Karnataka’s government PG stipend is ₹56,250–₹68,750 a month. If your college pays it in full, paying the interest each month during the course stops it from adding to the loan — and the EMI after the course is lower.
