Do I want patients?
If patient care is why you studied medicine, a non-clinical seat taken only for the rank may not satisfy you for a whole career.
Ranks, Exit Penalties, Daily Work and Careers Side by Side
Clinical branches mean patient care; non-clinical branches mean labs, teaching, research and public health. They also differ hugely in how late seats stay open and what it costs to change your mind. Here is the full comparison with 2025 Karnataka data — and a checker that shows how many of each your rank reaches.
Please note: closing ranks are the last rank allotted in 2025 across all KEA rounds; penalties are from the KEA 2025 chart. Confirm 2026 rules with KEA and MCC.

Choose clinical if you want patient care, procedures and practice; choose non-clinical if you want laboratory work, teaching, research or public health. Non-clinical seats are far easier to reach: in Karnataka 2025, government GM seats closed at 12,379 – 65,019 for clinical branches but 1,21,147 – 2,29,968 for non-clinical. Leaving a seat is also cheaper — KEA charged ₹10,000 to cancel a pre-clinical seat after Round 1, against ₹25,000 for clinical, and ₹1 lakh vs ₹18 lakh after the mop-up round.

Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry are lab-heavy; Pharmacology and Community Medicine lead to research, teaching and public health.

Clinical branches (General Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, OBG, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and others) involve direct patient care. Non-clinical branches (Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Hospital Administration) focus on laboratory work, teaching, research and public health.
Yes. In 2025, KEA government GM seats in clinical branches closed between 12,379 – 65,019, while non-clinical government GM seats closed between 1,21,147 – 2,29,968 — 7 of 8 non-clinical branches stayed open past 2 lakh.
On KEA government GM in 2025, MD Anaesthesiology stayed open longest among clinical branches, closing at 65,019. On management quota, every clinical branch closed after 1.7 lakh.
It can be, if you want to teach, work in a laboratory, do research or work in public health. It is a poor choice if you only want patient care — consider a private clinical seat, a later round or another attempt instead.
Yes. In KEA 2025, cancelling a pre-clinical seat cost ₹10,000 after Round 1 or 2 and ₹1,00,000 plus the course fee after the mop-up round, against ₹25,000 to ₹18,00,000 plus the course fee for a clinical seat.
Some non-clinical specialists run their own diagnostic laboratories (especially Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry), but most non-clinical careers are in medical colleges, hospital laboratories, research and public-health programmes rather than patient practice.
Yes. Every medical college needs faculty in pre-clinical and para-clinical departments, and NMC sets minimum faculty for each department, so medical-college teaching is one of the main career paths after a non-clinical MD.
