A high-fee seat you cannot pay for still counts as an allotment — and cancelling costs money.
Option Entry, College Order and Choice 1–4 Explained
Your seat in Karnataka PG counselling depends on two decisions: the order of colleges and branches you enter, and the choice you select after each allotment. This guide explains both, with the round-wise penalties you must know before you decide.
Please note: choice meanings and penalties are from KEA PG 2025 counselling. KEA notifies the exact rules for each 2026 round — read every round notification before you submit.

In KEA PG counselling you enter colleges and branches in your real order of preference — the system allots the highest option your rank and eligibility allow. After each allotment you pick one of four choices: Choice 1 accept and join, Choice 2 keep the seat (fee paid) and try for a better one, Choice 3 give up the seat and try again next round, or Choice 4 quit counselling. Cancelling a seat after joining is penalised — in 2025 from ₹25,000 after Round 1 to ₹18 lakh plus fee forfeiture after the mop-up round for clinical seats.

You enter colleges and branches in your order of preference on the KEA portal. KEA allots the highest option you qualify for by rank, category and eligibility clause. After each round you select Choice 1, 2, 3 or 4.
Choice 1 means you accept the allotted seat: you pay the full fee, complete document formalities and report to the college. You are not considered in later rounds.
Choice 2 means you keep the allotted seat (after paying the fee as instructed) and take part in the next round for a better seat. If you are not upgraded, you keep the current seat.
Choice 3 means you give up the allotted seat without paying and take part in the next round. You may get a better seat, a worse one or none.
Choice 4 means you quit KEA PG counselling for the year and are not considered in any later KEA round.
For clinical seats in 2025, cancelling after Round 1 admission cost ₹25,000, during Round 2 ₹1,50,000, after Round 2 joining ₹7,00,000 and after the mop-up round ₹18,00,000 plus course-fee forfeiture with a 3-year ban.
Enter every seat you would genuinely accept, in your real order of preference. Check the KEA notification for each round for any limit and the option-entry deadline.
You can usually modify options until the option-entry deadline for that round. After the deadline, the saved list is used for allotment.
